American Historical Figure. It was during his tenure as Mayor of Harpers Ferry (West) Virginia that John Brown and his faction raided his town in October 1859 with intentions to free, then arm the region's slaves. These insurgents commandeered the United States Arsenal located in Harpers Ferry; however, they cordoned themselves within the confines of this government building when their intentions became known to the townspeople. At some point during the siege that followed, the unarmed Beckham was fatally shot by one of the terrorist. The insurgency was ultimately squelched, and after a trial, John Brown was found guilty of treason in conjunction with the murder of the Mayor Beckham.
