On September 24, 1873, Crowley after serving in the US Navy, enlisted into the army as John Duggan in Boston MA. His civilian occupation was carpenter. He was described as 5'9", dark hair, gray eyes with a fair complexion.

On October 19, 1873, Crowely reported for duty at Ft Lincoln, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company L. Company L was commanded by Lt James Calhoun, brother-in-law to LTC George Armstrong Custer & Capt Tom Custer. On May 14, 1876, Crowley was assigned as LTC Custer's orderly.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, L Company was attached to Custer's Battalion. Crowley was killed during the battle. Since he was LTC Custer's orderly, it is likely that he died on or near Last Stand Hill.

Crowley's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were reburied in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

On March 29, 1877, Crowley's mother was awarded a survivior's pension.
