Connor enlisted into the US Army on December 5, 1867 in Boston MA. He was described as 5'8", brown hair, hazel eyes with a ruddy complexion. His civilian occupation was laborer.

On January 22, 1868, Conner reported for duty at Ft Leavonworth KS & was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. His daily duties were cook. At the conclusion of his enlistment, Connor reenlisted on December 5, 1872 in Unionville SC. He remained with Company E. His daliy duties were changed to pioneer. In June of 1873, he was promoted to corporal & assigned to post headquarters.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Conner was killed sometime during the fighting.

Conner was likely first buried where his unidentified remains were found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were reburied in a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

Lakota & Cheyenne accounts of the battle in addition to battlefield excavations reveal that Company E had conducted, until overwhelmed, a well organized & hard fought rearguard action towards Last Stand Hill.
