Corp Cody was described as 5'7", blue eyes, dark hair with a medium complexion. His listed civilian occupation was painter. Cody enlisted into the army under the alias of Henry M Scollin on September 24, 1873 in Boston MA.

On October 21, 1873, Cody was assigned to Company M, 7th US Cavalry at Ft Rice in Dakota Territory. M Company was commanded by Capt Thomas French & accompanied Maj Reno's Battalion at the Battle of the Little Bighorn.

During Reno's retreat from the Valley Fight, Cody was shot from his horse, while leaving a wooded area. Nearby friends heard him shout out "Goodbye Boys!"

Two days later his "severly mutilated body" was found where he was last seen. It is believed that Cody was killed near Army Scout "Lonesome" Charley Reynolds.

It is likely Cody's remains were first buried where he had died. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were removed to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

On February 21, 1891, his father was awarded a survivor's pension.
