Shirley Achler was born to Sarah and Samuel Melnick on December 4th, 1929, in Chicago, Ill.
Shirley left high school and attended beauty school to become a hairdresser in order to help the family with an extra income.
Sarah, her mom, owned a large apartment complex with an ajoinning beauty shop where she employed Shirley and another one of her daughters.
Shirley later met Sidney Achler, who was by trade a credit manager in the same neighborhood. After they were married on September 11, 1949, they moved into the apartment building that Sarah owned and had 2 of there 4 children.
Marla was born November 3 of 1950, and Debra came along May 28, 1953.
The family lived at the apartment until 1959, when they moved up a little north, to around Ford City Shopping Center, which was a large shopping mall. The first of it's kind in the Chicagoland area. Shirley contined hairdressing out of her basement for a few years, but found juggling a large family and doing patrons got to be a bit too much.
January 7 of 1959, they welcomed Sandra into their lives and then on January 4,1960 Scotty was born.
In 1964, the Achlers moved again to Skokie, Il, a quiet suburb north of Chicago. Shirley waited until Scotty was about 10 and went to work for Callahan Publishing company, where she bacame building manager.
She remained there for over 20 years.
Her husband Sidney has health issues. This caused her to having to leave her position to care for him.
Sidney passed away on February the 5th, 1997.

Sidney and Shirley have left behind 4 children, Marla Andich (Stethen), Debra Caccioppo (the late Ronald), Sandra Reeves(Craig) and Scott Achler(Heide). Along with many grandchildren. Dori, Sarah, Lucy, Daniel, Michael, Missy, Mariah, Sidney and Jeff and a daughter adopted by her first granddaught, Dori Andich
Things that I remember most about my mom, Shirley, is that she was one terrific mom. She took care of us all, the same, no one better then the next. Her and Sidney were like fairy tale parents. They got along always. My father Sid, had a sense of humor like no other. When I hear my friends talk about being abbused by a parent, I can not even imagine something like that, bacause I never experienced that. She loved my father until the very end of his life. She cared for him at home, up until 1 month before he died..
She herself in or around 2001 developed dimensha. This robbed her of her memory, and took us away from us, even a few years before she passed away on December the 3rd, 2005, 1 day before her 74th. birthday.
They best thing about this is that the nicest couple in the world are together again...
Shirley lost her mom Sarah, in 1980. 3 sisters, Esther Povitsky, Dorothy Steinner, and Mildred Di Giovonni. She is survived by a brother Herman Fein (Anne), June Taylor and Sally Ruber. And many nieces and nephews always miss this great couple...
