Pvt Cather enlisted into the army on November 8, 1872 in Pittsburgh PA. He was described as 5'8", grey eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion. His listed civilian occupation was pumper.

On December 1, 1872, Cather reported for duty at Louisville KY & was assigned to F Company, 7th US Cavalry. During the Yellowstone Expedition in July of 1873, he came down with a fever and convulsions. Unfit for duty, Cather was transported by steamboat back to Ft Lincoln in the Dakota Territory.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Cashan was killed.

After the battle many soldiers from Company F were found on or near Last Stand Hill.

Cather's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found on the battlefield. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
