Sgt Cashan enlisted into the US Army on January 7, 1867 at Cleveland OH. He was described as 5'9", blue eyes, brown hair with a ruddy complexion. His listed civilain occupation was laborer.

On January 30, 1867, Cashan reported for duty at Nashville TN & was assigned to Company D, 34th US Infantry. In 1871, he was placed off duty for 54 days due to sores on the soles of his feet. After his enlistement ended, Cashan reenlisted on December 17, 1872 in Boston MA. On February 11, 1873, he reported for duty at New Orlean LA, & assigned to Company L, 7th US Cavalry.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company L was attached to LTC George Armstorng Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Cashan was killed.

Several days after the fighting burial details found many members of Company L on or near Calhoun Ridge & Calhoun Hill.

Cashan's unidentified remains were likely first buried where they had been found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

On December 5, 1883, Cashan's mother was awarded a survivor's pension.
