Pvt Carney enlisted into the US Army on March 13, 1866, at New York, NY. He was described as 5'4", grey eyes, black hair with a dark complexion. His listed civilian occupation was laborer.

On March 31, 1866, Carney reported for duty at Potter's Station in Nebraska. He was assigned to the 30th US Infantry. His daily duties included guarding railroad property & quartermaster teamster. Upon his discharge on February 7, 1873, Carney promptly reenlisted. He was assigned to F Company, 7th US Cavalry at Lousiville KY.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company F was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Carey was killed.

Several days after the battle, burial details found many members of Company F on or near Last Stand Hill.

Carney's remains were not reported as being identified. He was likely first buried where his unidentified remains were found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
