Corporal Callahan enlisted into the US Army on November 5, 1872 at Boston MA. He was described as 5'7", grey eyes, dark hair, with a fair complexion. His civilian occupation was currier.

On December 9, 1872, Calllahan reported for duty at Yorkville SC & was assigned to Company K, 7th US Cavalry.

In August of 1873, Callahan was part of the Yellowstone Expedition.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Callahan had the misfortune of being the only member from Company K attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Callahan, on that day, was an acting hospital steward for Dr. George Lord. Both Dr. Lord & Callahan were killed sometime during the fighting.

Callahan's remains were not listed as being identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found.

In 1881, all known battlefield burials were re-buried in a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.

On February 7, 1891, his father was awarded a survivor's pension.
