Pvt Burnham was described as 5'8", grey eyes, red hair and ruddy complexion. He enlisted on February 7, 1873 & was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry at Louisville KY.

Company F, known as the Gray Horse Troop because of the gray horses they rode, was commanded by Capt George Yates.

Burnham was killed during the Battle of the Little Bighorn with Custer's command. Following the battle many soldiers from F Company were found on or near Last Stand Hill.

Burnham's body was never reported as being identified. It is likely that he was first buried, where his remains were found. In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
