On July 24, 1915 the SS Eastland had taken on more than 2,500 passengers for an excursion trip across Lake Michigan. They were employees of the Western Electric Company, their family members and guests and would be attending the 5th annual employee picnic at Washington Park in Michigan City, Indiana. While still docked, the ship rolled over onto it's side throwing passengers into the Chicago River and trapping others below deck. Nearly 850 men, women, children died as a result. Several whole families were lost. No memorial existed until 1989 when an historical marker was placed near the site. The marker, which was placed privately by students of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, was reported missing in 2000. In 2003 a new marker was cast and re-dedicated on the northeast corner of Wacker Drive and LaSalle Street, overlooking the exact site of the Eastland Disaster. Most victims were buried in various Chicago area cemeteries, while others were buried in cemeteries across the nation.
