Pvt Allan enlisted into the US Army on October 3, 1873 in Boston MA. Allan was described as 25 yrs old, brown eyes, black hair, dark complexion & 5'8 1/2" tall. His listed civilian occupation was watchmaker.

On October 21, 1873, Allan reported for duty at Ft Rice in the Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company C, 7th US Cavalry. Company C was commanded by two time Medal of Honor recipient, Capt Tom Custer. Capt Custer was also the brother of LTC George Armstrong Custer.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Capt Custer was assigned as aide-de-camp for his brother. Therefore, Lt Henry Harrington assumed command of Company C. Sometime during the fighting Allan was killed.

After the battle 15 soldiers from Company C, including two sergeants, were found near Calhoun Ridge on the right flank of Company L.

Allan's body was not listed as being identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were buried where they had been found on the battlefield.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
