Patrick Charles Conley, 73, died suddenly of a stroke, Monday, June 25, 2012, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 30, at New Life Lutheran Church in Norwalk. Family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Saturday, at the church.
Pat was born March 18, 1939, in St. Paul, MN, to Joseph and Margaret Helen Conley. He went to St. Paul Seminary from high school through college, and graduated with degrees in Latin and Philosophy. He earned his Master’s degree in social work from the University of Nebraska, and added another Master’s degree from Des Moines University in Health Care Administration.
Pat began his working career in Boys Town, NE, as director of the social services department. He continued his career at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth, MN, where he started the Psychiatric Social Work Department. From there he went to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines as the director of Social Services, and finished his career as a social worker for Hospice of Central Iowa.
Pat dedicated his life to serving God, serving others, and serving family. He served as officer and board member of the Child Abuse and Neglect Council, was on the board of the National Association of Social Workers as well as Big Brothers and Big Sisters, was a member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and was a former president and member of New Life Lutheran Church for 30 years. For the past four years Pat was the international chaplain for the Family Campers and RVer’s organization.
Pat enjoyed growing his own grapes, making his own wine, traveling and spending time with his family.
Pat is survived by his wife, Cathie; daughter, Christie (Brent) Engelbert and their children, Grant and Greta; son, Brendan (Dani) Conley and their children, Cristian and Jonathan; son, Kevin (Lisa) Conley and their children, Mya ,Violet and Ronan; sisters, Mary Lou Haider, Barbara (Bill) Weiss, and Nancy Mench; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to New Life Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
