Corp Briody was described as 5'5", blue eyes, brown hair, with a fair complexion. His listed civilian occupation was laborer. He enlisted into the army at New York, NY on August 9, 1866.

Briody was assigned to Company F, 7th US Cavalry on September 10, 1866 at Ft. Riley, Kansas. His daily duties were listed as acting company ferrier. On December 21, 1875, Briody was promoted to corporal.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn F Company was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Briody was killed sometime during the fighting.

Following the battle most of Company F was found on & in the area of Last Stand Hill.

There were some reports that Briody's body was not identified. Other reports, from members of a burial detail who knew Briody personally, claimed Briody's "terribly mutilated" body was identified by a "sailor" tattoo on his arm. They found his body in a ravine near Last Stand Hill along with Pvt Timothy Donnelly's remains. It is likely that Briody was first buried on the battlefield where he had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
