Pvt Barth enlisted into the US Army on December 6, 1872 at Albany NY. He was described as 5'10", grey eyes, brown hair with a fair complexion. His listed civilian occupation was jeweler.

On February 13, 1873, Barth reported for duty at Unionville SC & was assigned to Company E, 7th US Cavalry. Company E was later known as the Gray Horse Troop, because of the gray horses they rode.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company E was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer"s battalion. Sometime during the fighting Barth was killed.

Based upon Lakota/Cheyenne interviews, in addition to battlefield excavations, Company E appears to have conducted a well organized & hard fought rear guard action towards Last Stand Hill.

Also speculation ongoing specualtion about the final resting place of approximately 28 members of Company E. After the battle several soldiers on burial details reported seeing approximately 28 bodies from Company E in what is called the Deep Ravine. The bodies were reportedly not moved & buried where they had been found. Modern battlefield excavations have yet to reveal any evidence of soldier burials in Deep Ravine.

Barth's body was not identified after the battle. It is likely that his unidentified remains were buried where they had been found.

In 1881, all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.

On January 24, 1877, Barth's mother was awarded a survivor's pension.
