Pvt Barry enlisted into the US Army on September 21, 1875 at Boston MA. He was described as 5'7", grey eyes, dark hair, with a ruddy complexion. His civilian occupation was laborer.

On October 21, 1875, Barry reported for duty at Ft Lincoln in the Dakota Territory & was assigned to Company I, 7th US Cavalry at Ft Lincoln. Company I was commanded by Capt Myles Keogh.

At the Battle of the Little Bighorn Company I was attached to LTC George Armstrong Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting, Barry was killed.

After the battle Barry's body was not identified. It was likely that his remains were buried on the battlefied, where they had been found.

In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to a mass grave on top of Last Stand Hill.
