He was born June 15, 1926 in Greenup County, Kentucky, a son of the late Harry McElhaney and Minnie Crum McElhaney, a WWII Army Veteran where he received the Good Conduct Metal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon and Army Occupation Medal, member of the South Shore First Church of God, member of the Bricklayers Local #39 of Portsmouth, Ohio and James L. Flannery American Legion Post #276, South Shore, Kentucky.
Preceded in death by his wife, Dottie Louise Flannery McElhaney, April 25, 2012, one brother, Wendell McElhaney and one sister, Helen Liles.
Surviving are one son, Gary (Denise) McElhaney of South Portsmouth, Kentucky, daughter, Kathy (Roland) Diller of South Portsmouth, Kentucky, one brother, Harry Robert McElhaney of Dayton, Ohio, five grandchildren, Shane (Stacey) Diller, Justin (Megan) Diller, April (Bill) Jilbert, Ryan (Christine) McElhaney and Ashley (Clayton) Nickel, five great-grandchildren, Josiah McElhaney, Devin Diller, Kylee Jilbert, Colin Jilbert, Delonte Noble and one soon to be great-grandchild, Caleb Diller.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 27,2016 at the South Shore First Church of God, with Rev. Acy Gibson, officiating. Burial will follow at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast, Grayson, Kentucky. Friends may call at the church Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 6-8 p.m. and one hour before service time on Wednesday. Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion post #23, Portsmouth, Ohio.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Southern Ohio Medical Center Hospice, 2201 25th Street, Portsmouth, Ohio, 45662.
