Ruby Lee Palmer Sparks, age 93, of Charlotte died peacefully Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Carrington Place in Matthews. She was born July 13, 1917 in Davidson County to Robert Lee and Amanda Sharpe Palmer. Prior to the last nine years, Mrs. Sparks lived in Winston-Salem, working first at Gibson's Ice Cream Shop which she later purchased and operated as Bonnie's Soda Shop for 10 years. Afterwards she joined the staff of NC Baptist Hospital, working as a patient assistant for 17 years in the anesthesiology department. Mrs. Sparks was a long time member of First Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. With a song in her heart and on her lips, she approached life and served others with such joyfulness that her brother called her "Jubilee" instead of Ruby Lee. She will be missed, but her kindness will always be with us. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sparks was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, C. D. Sparks; sisters Huetokah Conner, Alice Lanning, and Artie Stone; and brother, Thurman Palmer. She is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Sparks Parrish, and husband Vernon of Charlotte; grandchildren Mandie Parrish of Greenville, SC and Ray Parrish of Durham; and a sister Sudie Bell (Teddie) Martin of Winston-Salem. The Funeral Service will be held Monday, January 3rd at 2:30 p.m. by Dr. David Hughes at Salem Funeral Home Chapel, 120 S. Main Street, in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 1:45 until 2:20 p.m. prior to the Service and after the Service on Monday. A private family burial will be held at a later date.
