Obituary of Mr. Marcus F. Shanteau, Jr.
(October 31, 1928 ~ April 27, 2016)

Marcus F. Shanteau, Jr., 87, passed away on April 22, 2016 with his children at his side. He was a quiet man, unusually sweet and kind, deeply loved by his family and friends, and will be greatly missed.

Marc was born on October 31, 1928, in New Orleans, LA, to Marcus F. Shanteau and Loraine Craft Shanteau. The family made their permanent home in Ocean Springs, MS in 1930.
Marc completed twelve years of public school in what is now the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center. He was a gifted trumpet player, a member of the Ocean Springs High School Greyhound football team, and was elected Most Handsome and Mr. OSHS. Marc then attended Mississippi State University, where he was a member of the track team and played trumpet in the Maroon Band and various dance bands. He graduated in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. After serving in the U. S. Army from 1950 to 1952, Marc accepted employment with Ingalls Shipbuilding.

In 1955, Ingalls selected Marc to study Nuclear Engineering in Pittsburgh, PA. While in Pittsburgh, Marc met and married Joye Wichert. The couple would have celebrated their 60th anniversary on May 9, 2016. After six months in Vallejo, CA as part of Marc’s studies, the couple returned permanently to Ocean Springs.
Marc continued his career with Ingalls as an original member of the nuclear submarine program team. He retired from Ingalls in 1990, and served as manager of his wife's psychology practice until Joye’s formal retirement in 2000 (although she continues to practice privately).
Marc was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs for over 50 years, where he served for over 20 years as an Elder and Clerk of the Session, and was a faithful member of the chancel choir.

Throughout his lifetime, Marc loved and appreciated all types of music, especially gospel, jazz, and classical. In addition to his church’s choir, he sang for ten years with the Gulf Coast Messiah Chorus, and took great pleasure in seeing his granddaughter Grace and son-in-law Paul singing and performing in church and local theater productions.
Marc was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Kathryn Shanteau McNeill. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dr. Joye W. Shanteau; his children, Virginia (Paul) Newton of Gulfport and Marc (Melissa) Shanteau of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Alex, Olivia, and Isabel Shanteau, and Grace Newton; nieces, Karen Allen, Betsi Ann Nagasawa, and Loraine McNeill; and special friend and caretaker, Cynthia Mullens.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at First Presbyterian Church in Ocean Springs, with visitation for family and friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. A private burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at a later date. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to First Presbyterian Church of Ocean Springs or the Alzheimer’s Association.
