Warrant Officer with 1st Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment, based in Petawawa, Ontario. Aged 38, he was born in Truro, NS and lived in Summerside, PEI. He is survived by his wife Kendra Mellish, sons Matthew and Koven, and parents Barry and Sandra Mellish.

He was one of four Canadian soldiers killed and nine others wounded during heavy fighting as part of a major International Security Assistance Force air and ground offensive against Taliban insurgents approximately 15 km west of Kandahar City, Afghanistan.

WO Mellish previously served in the Canadian Airborne Regiment and was on his seventh overseas deployment. His family stated that he loved NASCAR, working with his hands, and anything else that let him spend time with his boys. He spent much of his leave prior to deploying putting the finishing touches on the new family home and teaching his sons how to ride their new dirt bikes.

His awards and decorations include: United Nations Force in Cyprus - (UNFICYP), United Nations Protection Force (UNPROFOR), NATO Operations in Somalia, Canadian Forces Decoration (CD) Fomer Yugoslavia Bar, Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal (CPSM), General Campaign Star (GCS), ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) bar. Tours of Duty - Cyprus, Somalia, Croatia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanstan (twice).

About 1,000 people, including the premier and lieutenant-governor, packed St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Summerside, PEI for the funeral on September 12, 2006.
