DEBORAH JEAN (DIXON) GARRETT, 70, of Columbia, Maryland, went home to be with the Lord on November 4, 2015. On July 5, 1945, God blessed Mr. John Lovitt Dixon and Mrs. Lucille Wright Dixon with another beautiful baby girl. They named her Deborah; she was one of 15 siblings to bless this union and be raised in Davenport, Iowa.

Deborah was united in marriage to Wilbert A. Garrett Sr. on August 30, 1968. This marriage was blessed with two children, Jada Garrett and Wilbert Garrett Jr. (Shauntel).

Deborah had a career with the former Bell Telephone company and the Baby Bells retiring in February 1992 from C&P Telephone Company of Maryland. She also attended the University of Maryland and received a Paralegal Degree in 1991.

Deborah had a passion for life. She loved to read books, watch English theater and soap operas, and care for her family. She took great pride in cooking the best meals and really feeding you well. She was also a great listener, always responding with sound advice. But she had an adventurous side; she loved riding motorcycles with her husband. They would ride their Gold Wing motorcycle all over the U.S. In fact, they once traveled 1,000 miles in a single day. Although she traveled extensively, she truly loved coming home and was proud of her heritage.

When those she loved were sick, she always came home to check on them. She even took time to keep in touch with long-time friends from school, Patsy Randall (Minneapolis), Carol Simmons (Milwaukee), Sharon Garrett (Davenport), to name a few. Yet, in a crisis you could call on Deborah and she was there. For example, when her health was declining and she prepared to enter the hospital, her son’s step-son asked Deborah for $5,000 to help him buy a home. She handed over the money with her trademark generosity. She never expected to get anything in return, but she did get 80% of the money back after closing.

The void in our families will be huge, but heaven has gained an angel. She loved her husband and children and made sure they were taken care of. Preceding her in death are her parents, four sisters and three brothers, Colleen Dixon, Geraldine (Howard) Perkins, Drucilla (Joe) Kimmins, Voncille (Willie) Tellie, John Otis (Kathern) Dixon, James Lovitt Dixon, and Michael Kent Dixon; brother-in-law Glenn Perkins and sisters-in-law Beverly Garrett and Zelma Dixon.

Those left to cherish memories of Deborah are her loving husband, Wilbert, Sr.; her beloved daughter Jada; her adored son Wilbert, Jr. (Shauntel); her sisters Rochelle Perkins, Josephine Dixon, Stephanie (Russell) Hall, Betty (Reggie) Boswell, and Toni Elizabeth (Gavin) Angel; brothers Ernest and Ronald Dixon; sister-in-law Jo Ann Dixon and a very special brother-in-law William C. Garrett. She loved her many nephews and nieces like Kim Robinson with whom she communicated almost daily.

Services will be held at 1 pm Tuesday, November 10th at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Visitation will be held from 4-7 pm Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport.
