Clara Faye Roberson Hicks, 66, a retired homemaker, of 1307 Ormer Road, died Jan. 20, 1998, in her home after a valiant battle with cancer.

Mrs. Hicks, born in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and raised in Goochland, Va., was the daughter of the late Wilbur Richard Roberson and Emily Pearce Roberson Alvis. Faye was predeceased by her husband, Vernon Jackson "Jack" Hicks Jr. and was a member of Oaklette United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Hicks was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. An active matriarch, she helped to support her family by working as a telephone operator and a sales clerk during her business career. As a dedicated community leader, Mrs. Hicks served on numerous political campaigns and with civic organizations, including the PTA (past president), Cub Scouts, Band Parents, and the IBEW Ladies Auxiliary. In addition, she loved to sew, garden, write poetry and, above all, was an avid league bowler for many years.

Survivors include three daughters, Faye Marie Hayes, Margaret E. Hicks, Mary K. Pitt, all of Virginia Beach; two sons, Vernon J. Hicks III of Virginia Beach, Randolph T. Hicks, AIA, of Suffolk; a brother, W. Harold Roberson of Washington, N.C.; a half-brother, Forrest E. Alvis; a sister, Alice Roberson Keeton; a half-sister, Bonita Alvis Cowardin, all of Richmond; and eight granddaughters. She was predeceased by her half-brother, A. Bruce Alvis of Richmond.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Oaklette United Methodist Church by the Rev. Sebert W. Rorrer and Dr. Alan Felumlee. Burial will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends in Oaklette United Methodist Church from 7 to 9 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to Oaklette United Methodist Church, 520 Oaklette Drive, Chesapeake, or to Hope Haven Children's Home, 3000 North Landing Road, Virginia Beach. R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
