Nicholas J. Gentleman was the son of Robert W. Gentleman and Ellen (Driscoll) Gentleman. His mother died in Ontario, Canada. He was the husband of Catherine (Carrig) Gentleman. They married in 1893 and had three children.

Kearney Daily Hub, December 4, 1944:

"N. John Gentleman, 82, whose home was at 502 West 26th, died Saturday evening at a local hospital following a three-weeks illness. He had lived in Kearney since 1908 and for 29 years as engineer of the city water works. Mrs. Gentleman died several years ago.

Surviving are one son, Gerald, of North Platte; one daughter, Mrs. R. W. Ryan, Omaha, and a sister, Mrs. L. F. Mogle of Indianapolis, Ind.

Services, in charge of the Bower morturary, will be held at the St. James Catholic church at 9 a. m. Tuesday with the Rev. F. J. Tschida officiating, and burial here. Castetbearers will be A. C. Wititera, R. A. Daugherty, Fred Richter, Jack Hawe, A. C. Lantz and Martin Brazil."
