“The death of Mary L. Hawker occurred Sunday afternoon at 2:10 o’clock at the family home one mile south of Wheeling. She had been in failing health for several years and for the past two months had been bedfast.

She was a woman that was well known all over the county and loved by all. In her suffering she was very patient and always thought of others before herself and had a pleasant word for everyone coming to see her. She will be greatly missed not only by her sorrowing family, but by the community at large.

Mary L. Furbee was born Basnettville, West Virginia, Jan. 6, 1839, and died April 30, 1916, aged 76 years, 3 months and 24 days. She came from a family that was well known all over the east and south in financial and political affairs. Her father, the late Jas. Furbee, was for a number of years senator of West Virginia.

She leaves seven children, James of Bonner Springs, Kansas; Charles, Frank, Guy, Delia and Dora of Wheeling and Mrs. Geo. R. Brenneman of Chillicothe; and an adopted daughter, Harriet. Her husband, the late Amos Hawker, died last October. One daughter, Mary, died last August and one son died in infancy.

The funeral services will be held Tuesday at the family home.” The Chillicothe Constitution, May 4, 1916
