OBITUARY: Mary Anne Hennen-Kummer, June 01, 1941~ April 23, 2016 - reprinted from the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home website

Mary Anne Hennen-Kummer, age 74 of Hastings, died peacefully on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at Augustana Care of Hastings, following an extended illness.

Mary Anne, the daughter of James and Frances (Norman) Marx, was born on June 1, 1941 in St. Paul. Following her graduation from high school, Mary Anne continued her education at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa, and later received her Master’s equivalent in Psychology from the University of Minnesota. She was blessed with two children in her first marriage, Erica and David, and was later married to Gordon Hennen in 1992; he later preceded her in death in 2009. She then married Martin Kummer on December 29, 2011, in Vermillion. During the 1960’s Mary Anne was the first woman to rank in Minnesota’s top ten for drag racing. She was a longtime and dedicated special education teacher in both St. Paul and Dakota County Juvenile Service Center. Mary Anne enjoyed volunteering at Hastings Family Service and was a member of St. Pius V and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parishes.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her second husband, Gordon; her brother and sister-in-law, Norman (Alana) Marx; and by her niece, Gina Marx.

Mary Anne is survived by her husband, Martin of Hastings; her children, Erica Anne Sandquist of Hastings and David Andrew (Greta) Sandquist of St. Paul and by her four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mary Anne is also survived by Martin’s children, Joe (Barbara) Kummer of Hastings, Bob (Sue) Kummer of Hastings, Mike (Cindy) Kummer of Hastings, Carol (Cy) Schmitz of Rosemount, Larry (Lisa) Kummer of Hastings, Paul (Pat) Kummer of Hastings, Mary (Gary) Rondeau of Hastings, Jane (Pat) Schmitt of Hastings and Barb (Ted) Kranz of Hastings; and also by his 19 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 28, 2016 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Vermillion, with Father Cole Kracke officiating. Private family interment will take place at a later date. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Hastings, and will continue for one hour prior to Mass on Thursday at church.
