US Congressman. He attended Emory and Henry College and graduated from the University of Virginia. Ridgway studied law and became an attorney in Liberty (now Bedford). He was later employed as editor of the Bedford Sentinel, and relocated to Richmond in 1853 to assume the editor's position at the Richmond Whig. An opponent of secession, at the outbreak of the Civil War he retired to Cool Well, his estate near Amherst. He was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Whig in 1866, but was not permitted to take his seat because Virginia had not been readmitted to the Union. After Reconstruction was complete Ridgway was elected to Congress as a Conservative in 1869, serving from January 1870 until his death.
