Susan JANE (Funderburk) Yocam Johnson was born in the East Atchison/Winthrop area of southwest Buchanan County, Missouri in 1845. She was the eldest of eight children of William W. Funderburk (born 1816) and Levinia (or Lavina) "Bina" Wallace (1822-1886). Following William Funderburk's death, her mother "Bina" married James Gladden - sometime after 1857.

Susan Jane's siblings, in birth order were:
1) George Bluford Funderburk, born 1849 - married Fernette "Nettie" Yocam in 1871 and had four children: Margaret Mae "Maggie", Pierce Lewis, Stella and Mary.
2) Martha, born 1851
3) James, born 1852
4) Newton JOSEPH, born 1854
5) William W. born 1857; married Annie "Dicey" Wood
6) Marinda, born 1862; and
7) Margaret Anne, known variously as Pollie, Maggie and Meg. She was "Aunt Meg" to generations of Susan Jane's descendants. "Aunt Meg" married James J. Furlong and the couple lived in Chickasha, Oklahoma; because Meg was near in age to Susan Jane, they had a relationship more like sisters than aunt and niece and "Aunt Meg" spent several weeks every summer with her Yocam kin in Platte and Buchanan counties through the 1930s. (See Find A Grave Memorial # 53335364 for Meg and # 30685241 for her husband James Furlong.)

Susan Jane was married to George Washington Yocam March 14, 1861 in Platte Co, Missouri. They had 10 children:
1) Elizabeth Sarah "Lizzie", who married Dr. J. B. West and had four children - Ernest, Vernie, Everett and Everest;
2) Catherine Jane "Kate", who married Napoleon Bonaparte (Tone) Turpin II and had two sons - Granville Eugene and Sanford Lee;
3) Fernett, who died at two years;
4) Martha America, who married George A. Vosse and had one daughter - Grace Irene;
5) Malinda, who died at age 14;
6) Isaac R. who was married to Minnie Beagle and had one son, William Jennings Bryan Yocam;
7) James N., who died at age 10;
8) Daniel Washington "ED", who married Fonda Swisher and had two children - Dale and Mildred - and after Fonda's death married Anna Ellis Manning;
9) Johnny S., who died at three weeks; and
10) Maude M. "Maudie" who married, first, Gladiator "Gladdie" Bailey and had a daughter Lillian Irena "Irene" and secondly married Clyde G. Brooks.

Following husband George's death in 1882, Susan Jane married Daniel W. Johnson and they had four children: Cora, Luther and Alena all died as infants but last daughter, Georgia MYRTLE (1886-1970) lived a long life; she married Alvin Dickson and they had three children - Luther, Alvin and Winona.

Susan Jane died May 24, 1895 at age of 51 years, 4 months, 6 days; Yocam Family Bible records that funeral sermon was preached by M. S. Connor. She was buried with the name Susan Johnson on her tombstone in the Yocam Cemetery near the Buchanan-Platte county line when she died in 1895. Her first husband George W. Yocam is also buried in Yocam Cemetery and they share a monument. Her second husband Daniel Johnson lived until 1931 and is buried in Sugar Creek Cemetery, southeast of Rushville, Buchanan County, Missouri.

Photo of Susan Jane's monument graciously provided by cousins Diana, Keith and Dennis Stanton. Biographical information from family records, Yocam Family Bible, and Annals of Platte County.

Names of both husbands - George W. Yocam and Daniel R. Johnson - are on Susan Jane's monument (either on the unreadable bottom or on back) per Platte County Cemetery Records book by Shirley Kimsey and shared with me by Mary Bailey.
