Kari Lea Martin Johnson joined her Savior Jesus Christ April 19, 2016, in Las Vegas, following a one-year battle with cancer. Her loving family was by her side. Kari was born July 8, 1955, in Sidney, Mont., to Agnes and Frank E. Martin, the youngest of five children. At the age of six, Kari's family moved to Las Vegas, where Kari lived throughout her elementary and high school years. In 1975, Kari's sense of adventure led her north to Alaska, where she met the love of her life, Paul C. Johnson. Paul and Kari were married in 1980 and settled in Wasilla, Alaska. Kari Lea was preceded in death by husband, Paul Johnson; and by her parents, Agnes and Frank E. Martin of Las Vegas. Eventually, she moved back home to Nevada full-time, treasuring her time with her Las Vegas family while welcoming visits from her Alaska friends and family. Kari's extended family in Nevada and Alaska take solace in the knowledge that she is now, truly, home. Kari was employed by Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE) as a chief financial officer for 20 years. She was an avid volunteer for kids programs in her community, serving on the board of Trick-or-Treat Town and the Imaginarium. Kari's first joy and passion was for her family and her many friends. Her six grandchildren have many happy memories of holidays spent at Grandpa Paul and Nana's. Summer brought cookouts in Paul and Kari's expansive, sun-drenched gardens. At soccer games, birthday parties, garden club, fishing expeditions, garage sales and the Alaska State Fair, Kari enthusiastically demonstrated her limitless love for family, friends and community. She is survived by her brothers, Frank Martin (Bonnie), Bill Martin (Linda) and Timm Martin (Crystal), all of Las Vegas, and John Martin (Rhonda) of Washoe Valley; nieces and nephews, Jerrad and Sara Martin, Guy and Trish Martin, Scott and Christy Martin, Christopher and Breanna Martin, Adrienne Martin, Charles Martin, Amanda Mendez, Justin and Maranda Martin, Nielsine Sherk, Tim and Allison Martin and Micah Martin; as well as many grandnieces and grandnephews, Ryann Martin, Makenna Martin, Travis Martin, Garrett Martin and Olivia Martin, Elena Mendez, Karina Mendez, Marshall Mendez, Alex Martin and Richard Sherk, all of Nevada. Kari is also survived by her children, Kathrin (Jim) Pereira and Matt (Maureen) Johnson; grandkids, Mackenzie Himmelwright, Madelyn Himmelwright, Milo Johnson, Michael Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson and Julia Johnson, all of Alaska. She especially enjoyed her little furball companions, Lila Pie, Lily Bean and Mollie. Kari Lea loved to go to the kids' ball games and sit on the sidelines and holler her head off. Services in Las Vegas will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, at Canyon Ridge Christian Church (Chapel), 6200 W. Lone Mountain Road. An Alaska celebration of life is being planned for June in Wasilla.
