Sarah was divorced from Tom Short, which probably explains the section chiseled out of the tombstone after her name.

The wedding announcement for Sarah and Tom:

Short - McDowell
Married at the residence of Captain Ewing Roberts in Booneville, Mo. Dec. 4th, Mr. George Thomas Short of St. Martin, Morgan County, and Miss Sarah Belle McDowell, of Cooper County, the Rev. W. T. Russell officiating.
Following the ceremony and congratulations an excellent dinner was served at the Roberts home. After which the happy couple departed over the Versailles and Booneville Branch Railway to the home of the groom, three miles south of Fortuna in Morgan County, where they will live until the first of March when they will move to Vermont, Cooper County, their future home.
The bride is one of Cooper County's most highly esteemed Christian women, and a devoted member of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church. The groom is one of Morgan County's most popular and leading citizens. He is also an active Baptist, and a member of Freedom Baptist Church.
The leader extends cordial congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Short and wishes for them abundant success and a long married life of analloyed happiness.
