FATHER AEDAN DAVIS, SA.


A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Graymoor Dec. 12 for the Rev. Aedan Davis, SA, an Atonement Friar who died Dec. 6, following heart surgery at the Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C. He was 62 years old and had been an Atonement Friar almost 40 years. Born Bertam Stanley Davis in Jersey City, Father Davis came to Graymoor in 1936 and professed vows as an Atonement Friar in 1938. He was ordained a priest in 1945 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington. DC. In his 32 years as a friar priest, Father Davis served as pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Greenwood, British Columbia (195054): assistant pastor (1954-61) and pastor (1961-66) of Our Lady of the Atonement Church, Kinston, North Carolina; and assistant pastor of St. Anthony's Church, Herefore, Texas (1966-1975). Most Rev. Joseph Gossman, bishop of Raleigh, North Carolina, was principal celebrant of a funeral mass Dec. 9, at Saint Francis DeSales Church, Lumberton, N.C, where Father Davis had served as assistant pastor since 1975.

Most Rev. Joseph Gossman, bishop of Raleigh, North Carolina, was principal celebrant of a funeral mass Dec. 9, at Saint Francis DeSales Church, Lumberton, N.C, where Father Davis had served as assistant pastor since 1975. Rev. Noel McSweeney, SA, pastor, will be the homilist.

Very Rev. Kevin F. McMorrow, SA, superior general of the Atonement Friars, was principal celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial in Garrison, Dec. 12. The Rev. Wilfrid Brennan, SA, vicar general, was the homilist. Burial was in the friars' cemetery at Graymoor.

FR. AEDAN DAVIS, SA
1915-1977
Bert Stanley Davis, Jr. was born on November 24, 1915 in Jersey City, NJ to Bert Davis, Sr. and Mabel Jelly Davis. Bert was one of six siblings with four brothers and one sister. He was baptized on December 26, 1915 at St. Aeden's Church in Jersey City. His Dad was a carpenter and his Mom a housewife.
He attended PS 18 and 11 in Jersey City for elementary education and St Aloysius High School. He worked at Macy's as a stock boy for three years before coming to Graymoor. During this time he also served in the NJ National Guard with E Company, 104th Engineers, and 44th Division.
Having not been accepted by the Friars Minor, he was referred to Graymoor. Bert came to Graymoor in September 1936 at the age of twenty-one. He attended St. John's Seminary for a year before entering the Novitiate on August 15, 1937. Here he received the religious name Aedan. Subsequently, he professed first vows on August 16, 1938.
Aedan studied at Catholic University in Washington, DC where he received a BA in Philosophy in 1942. He then studied Theology at Catholic University. Aedan was ordained to the priesthood on May 22, 1945 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception by Bishop John McNamara along with eleven friar classmates. These included Wilfrid Brennan, SA, Hubert Byrnes, SA, Canisius Kiniry, SA, Celestine Leahy, SA, Julius Madgar, SA, Alan Mohan, SA, Adunatus Panittieri, SA, Boniface Reidmann, SA, Damian Sato, SA, Michael Simko, SA and John Forest Tierney, SA.
After ordination, Aedan taught at St. John's Seminary at Graymoor for three years. He then pursued graduate studies in Mathematics at Catholic University for two years. He was then assigned as Pastor at Sacred Heart Church, Greenwood, British Columbia, Canada for three years. He then served as Assistant Pastor (1954-1961) and Pastor (1961-1966) at Our Lady of the Atonement Church in Kinston, NC for eight years before going to St. Anthony's Church in Hereford, TX as Assistant Pastor. He served there eight years before returning to North Carolina.
Aedan served as Assistant Pastor at St. Francis de Sales Church in Lumberton from 1975 till his death on December 6, 1977 in North Carolina. He was 62 years old and had been an Atonement Friar for almost forty years. The Bishop of Raleigh, Most Rev. Joseph Gossman, celebrated a funeral Mass at the Lumberton parish. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Graymoor with interment at the Friars' Cemetery.
