FR. VINCENT EDGE, S.A.
(William G. Edge)
(1882-1966)

William Edge was born on November 24,1882 in
Ottawa, Canada, the only child of James Edge and Mary
Moore. His elementary schooling took place at Holy Angels
School and St. Patrick's, staffed by the Christian Brothers.
Due to his father's poor health William had to stop school and
go to work in order to support the family. ln time William
became a plumber and formed the Edge Plumbing, Heating
and Ventilation Company with offices in Montreal, Ottawa
and Toronto. It was his company that serviced the Parliament
Buildings in Ottawa. As time went on he fe1l in love and
married Ida Mary Cameron. From this union was born a
daughter. After the birth of the daughter, his wife Mary
became ill and remained bed ridden for the rest of her life.

With his wife's illness William became more prayerful, attending mass and receiving
communion daily. Once an acquaintance asked him if he ever thought of becoming a priest?
He answered, "I'm still a married man". As a result of spiritual direction and counseling he
decided even though his wife was still living, he would begin studies which he hoped
someday would result in the priesthood. He settled up his business affairs, took care of his
wife and daughter and began to study Latin with the Jesuits. This led to the study of
Philosophy with the Jesuits in Winnipeg and theology at Oscott College in England and at the
Beda in Rome.

Shortly after the death of his wife, William was ordained to the priesthood in
Mincheau, China on May 26,1934 by Bishop Henninghouse, S.V.D. His first mass was
celebrated at the Cathedral in Mincheau, China. The homilist was Fr. King, S.V.D.

After five years as a parish priest in Ontario, Canada, from reading the Lamp
Magazine, Father applied to Graymoor for admittance and was accepted. He received the
habit of the Friars of the Atonement at Graymoor, receiving the name of Vincent on
September 23,1939.He made his first profession of vows in 1940 and his final vows in 1943.
As a friar he served at Graymoor, the friary in Rhode Island and at one time opened a mission
in Alaska.

To many Fr. Vincent looked a great deal like Fr. Paul our Founder. He enjoyed fishing
and in the good weather was often seen fishing at Indian Lake. Prior to retiring he was
chaplain at Villa Loretto in Peekskill, N.Y. Father Vincent died on October 17,1966 in the
County Hospital, Manitowac, Wisconsin. He was 84 years of age. A funeral mass was offered
for Fr. Vincent Edge in Our Lady of the Atonement Chapel, followed by interment in the
Friars Cemetery.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE

Note:
When the 16mm promotional/vocational film "The Graymoor Story" was made in 1955, Father Vincent was the ideal choice to play the role of Father Paul but unfortunately the producers and Father Simeon Heine, SA., the then Vocational Director gave up on that idea due to Father's cantankerous attitude and his heavy use of raw garlic which tended to keep people at a distance. Father Andrew Lewis, SA., was assigned the part.

Father Vincent was a friar priest that you could not help but love, garlic or no garlic.
