(1908-1984)

Angelo Michael Bursis was born on April 26, 1908 in
Newark, NJ to Thomas Joseph Bursis and Mary Raffaela
Marden. He was one of nine siblings, with four sisters and four
brothers. His Dad was a tailor while his Mom was a housewife.
Both of his parents were born in Italy. He was baptized at Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Newark on September 20, 1908.
One of his brothers was Bro. John Joseph Bursis, SA.

He attended St Joseph's School in Jersey City, NJ. He
then worked at several jobs with an insurance company and box
factory before coming to Graymoor in 1928. He attended St.

John's Seminary at Graymoor before entering the Novitiate in 1931 and receiving the religious
name John Marie. He professed his first vows on August 18, 1932 and took his final vows on
August 19, 1935 at Graymoor. After profession, he attended the Catholic University of America
for undergraduate studies in Philosophy and Theology.

Fr. John Marie was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Joseph Corrigan on December
20, l94O at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC along with five
classmates. These included Gerard Gaynor, SA, Martin Jennings, SA, Peter Baptist Katsuno, SA,
Appolinaris Milano, SA, and William Murphy, SA.

Following ordination, Fr. John Marie served as Procurator at Graymoor, Washington, DC
and Saranac Lake, NY during the difficult war years of rationing and food shortage. He spent
fifteen years, from 1955 to 1970, in the mission areas of North Carolina, especially as Pastor of
St. Madeline's Mission in Lumberton. During this time, he served a term as Regional Superior. In
l970,he went to Our Savior's Chapel in Brockton, MA and spent eleven years there in pastoral
work.

In 1981, Fr. John Marie retired to the Seminary in Washington, DC where he lived until
an accident which incapacitated him and forced his moving to the Mairs Nursing Home in
Peekskill, NY. After a long and painful illness, he died on April 10, 1984 at the age of seventy-
six. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Graymoor, with burial in the Friars' Cemetery.
