Dr. Fred Ruiz peacefully passed away at his home Wednesday, Oct. 31 at the age of 84. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith St. Pierre Ruiz; his father and mother, Capt. Rueben Ruiz and Velma Albarez Ruiz; and his brother, Rueben Ruiz, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Laura, and her husband Mike Farris; four sons, Frederick, Jr. and his wife Debbie Albers Ruiz, James Ruiz and his wife Beth Waggenspack Ruiz, John Ruiz, and Thomas and Sonia Portugez Ruiz; nine grandchildren, Jason, Jenny, Michael, Matthew, Sarah and Franchesca Ruiz, and Rachel, Jake and Remy Fontenot; and a great grandchild, Jackson Ruiz. Dr. Ruiz was a graduate of Catholic High School, Spring Hill College and LSU School of Medicine. Serving as a Captain in the Air Force, he was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base from 1956 to 1958. He dedicated his life to the care of others through his pediatric medical practice from 1958 to 1993. He enjoyed continuing his medical work within the Department of Social Services - Disability Determinations from 1993 to 2012. During the final years of his life, he most looked forward to "Wine Night," celebrated every Friday with his children, grandchildren, great grandchild, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visiting will take place at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East, 11000 Florida Blvd., on Friday, Nov. 2 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting will be at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 445 Marquette Ave., on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Rev. Paul Counce, celebrant. Burial will follow at Greenoaks Memorial Park.
