Merry, Genevieve Barr Age 104, of Minneapolis, died peacefully August 4, 2015. Preceded in death by parents, John (age 98, 1975) and Emma Barr (1944), older brother Donald Barr (1949), younger brother Byron Barr, aka Gig Young (1978), and husband, Ora McKusick (O.M.) Merry (1982). Born in St Cloud, July 15,1911. Gen attended St Cloud Tech HS and obtained a 2-year degree at Teacher's College before becoming an elementary schoolteacher in Motley and Winnebago until marrying Fairmont bachelor, O.M. Merry, 20 years her senior in 1938. Later, after they moved to the University neighborhood in Minneapolis she finished her degree at age 54 at the U and returned to teaching 4th grade at Putnam School in NE Minneapolis until retirement. Young at heart and the life of the party-that was open-minded, intelligent and fun-loving Gen. She was never an "old lady". She instinctively connected with children-and they with her. She appreciated beauty and culture-art, literature, theater, music, movies, travel, good food. She lived and dressed in style. Engaged in the world around her, she read a daily paper, magazines, and watched public television until her last few days. With a warm smile and an upbeat attitude, Gen brightened this world every day for 104 years. Many thanks to her HealthPartners hospice team and the wonderful caregivers at Keystone Assisted Living Highland Park, where she spent her last 9 months after nearly 20 years of living independently (with valued assistance from Cheryl) at Ridgepointe in Minnetonka. A gathering to celebrate Gen's life will be held on Sunday, October 4. More information to follow.
