Jason Scott Barnett was born on March 5, 1953 in Dallas, Texas to Terrell & Wilma (Woodard) Barnett. When he was young, Jason’s father affectionately referred to his son as “Scooter,” and the name seemed to stick. Scooter graduated from Buffalo High School on May 18, 1984. He held many jobs around Buffalo including sacking groceries at Daily’s Grocery, now the present day Brookshire Brothers, and working at the Weathervane Restaurant, where he became friends with the many DPS officers and Deputies who would come to eat a good, home-cooked meal. Scooter loved attending the Turkey Shoot at the Flo Community Center every year and going bowling on his birthday. While living in Palestine, Scooter, who loved to sing, was able to sing at the nursing home, along with a group from Sacred Heart Catholic Church, every Monday and Friday. He also was such a big help to his sister while he lived with her in Palestine. Scooter always found a job to do and did it to the best of his ability. He always took care of blowing the leaves out of the yard, and took such great care in doing so that he actually went through about four different blowers because he was outside blowing the leaves so much! Scooter also took care of feeding and watering the cattle at his sister’s home. He always found a job to do. In his free time, Scooter liked to watch wrestling on television. He also had several video games about wrestling that he would play. Scooter had lived the past fourteen years in Palestine, coming from Buffalo, and was a member of the Westwood Baptist Church. Scooter passed away on April 17, 2016 in Palestine. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and brother, Lannie Ray Barnett. Surviving family members include brother, Wilbur Lee “Sonny” Barnett & wife, Dora, of Palestine and sisters, Sharon “Sherry” Matney & husband, Paul, of Buffalo and Trudy Huffman and husband, B.J. “Bob,” of Palestine. Scooter is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Walters’ Buffalo Funeral Home in Buffalo, Texas is in charge of all arrangements.
