John Berry married Sarah McDonald in Springville, IN about 1798. He fought in the battle of Tippecanoe where his younger brother Lt. Thomas Berry died. He served under General William Henry Harrison in War of 1812. It is not known whether he attained the rank of Captain, however. John and Sarah founded the town of Anderson in Madison county in 1827. A marker in Anderson commemorates their contributions. John is also recognized for blazing a trail called Berry's Trace, noted with a historical marker in Osgood, Ripley County, IN. According to family recollection John was driving pigs from his home in Anderson to market and died in Huntington county where he was buried in an unknown grave.
