Esther Loewen was born on February 20, 1924 in Winkler, Manitoba, Canada to Jacob and Maria (Bueckert) Hiebert. She passed away peacefully on April 6, 2013 at the age of 89 at Palm Village Retirement Community in Reedley.

Esther's family moved to Los Angeles when she was five years old were her father went to work for her uncle Cornelius. She had lots of cousins in the area to visit with. After she graduated from high school, she worked as a secretary for a diamond wholesaler in the Jewelry Trades Business in downtown Los Angeles.

Esther gave her life to the Lord at age 12, and was baptized near Los Angeles in the Pacific Ocean at Seal Beach. She sang in the choir at the Los Angeles Mennonite Brethren Church where she met her future husband.

Esther married Wallace Loewen on June 12, 1943. She was a Canadian immigrant and war bride who raised five children, drove a 641/2 Mustang and soloed a plane at the age of 60, all to keep up with a husband who drove a Harley, volunteered as an EMT and trained glider pilots. She allowed motorcycles to be parked inside the front entry of the house. She willingly gave up her bedroom so the love of her life could build an airplane in it and the spent years touring the country with him. She passed away on the cusp of their 70th anniversary.

Esther followed Dad around the country shortly after marrying him, as the Army transferred him to Texas for training and then Bushnell General Hospital in Brigham, Utah during Warold War II. They then moved to Shafter, CA for five years, and finally to Reedley.

She was active in yourth outreach with Mrs. Bill Wagner, visiting girl's dorms at Reedley College, inviting them to church, Bible studies and games in her home. She was active in many Bible study groups which she loved. She played piano for six years at the Dinuba Bible Chapel pastored by their friends, Wes & Ann Neufeld. There she also developed a friendship with Erma who later married Rev. Richard Gerbrandt.

Esther had a long and exemplary career as a legal secretary. She got her legal training with attorney Bill Bloyd in Reedley for 19 years, learning all aspects of legal work. Then she worked for 21 years for Jack Baker of the prominent firm Baker Manock & Jensen in Fresno where she retired in 1998 at the age of 74.

After many years of comical and unusual times with her husband she wrote a short book titled Life with Wally, recounting many of those memories from their past together.

Esther was a intelligent woman, full of joy a loving mother and generous to her family and friends alike. Her heart and her home were open to others. She welcomed others who needed a place to live to move in with her family for extended periods when they were in need, where they experienced her love and generosity in a family atmosphere. She always taught Godly respect and kindness for all through her example.

Esther always had a strong sense of humor which she passed on to her children. Her humor shined even in the worst of times, always bringing a smile to those around her in spite of her circumstances or health issues.
