Son of Michael J. Shreenan and Elizabeth Nash. His mother died in 1914. His father Mike remarried around 1916; Hugh's stepmother was Louisa "Lulu" McGrath Bennett. In the early 1920s Hugh was a clerk at the Lackawanna steel plant and lived with his sister Olive in the household of their maternal aunt, Nora Finnegan née Nash in Buffalo's 1st Ward. Hugh married Catherine A. Barth around 1925. In the 30s, Hugh was assistant foreman at the steam railroad. In August 1934, he was a Democratic candidate for the 4th assembly district of the State Committee. In Timothy Bohen’s book “Against the Grain”, Hugh is mentioned as one of the leaders of the Pioneer Civic Association, founded in 1939. In 1951 Hugh was the General Chairman of the Old Lady of Perpetual Help Men’s Society. Hugh and Catherine had one daughter, Mary Ellen.
