Bernadette was the daughter of Geroge I. and Golden S. (Slowey) Barrett. She attended school in New Lisbon and continued her education at Northern Michigan University, earning her bachelor and master's degree in education. Bunny was a teacher in Wisconsin, Powers and then Bark River Schools. Following the completion of her master's degree, she started a special education reading program at Bark River Schools.
On July 7, 1946, Bernadette married Harvey Arkens in Camp Douglas, Wis. They were blessed with nearly 70 years of marriage.
Bunny enjoyed crocheting, and her involvement with the Bark River Legion Auxiliary and helping with the Special Olympics. She was also a member on the MEA Board for many years.
Bunny was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church.
Among survivors include: two daughters, Katherine (Frederick) Kimpel, and Debra (Brian) Droscha; son- in-law, Robert Haara ; eight grandchildren, George, Raymond (Leah) and Roberta Haara, Tanya (Richard) Sorenson, Harvey Kimpel, Jason, Sarah and Rebekah Davenport; and four great-grandchildren.
Bunny was preceded in death by: her parents; a daughter, Sheila Haara in 2011; and Harvey's brothers, Joe and Richard; sister, Mary; and Bunny's brother, Edgar Barrett.
