Son of Samuel Gilson VAIL and Roxanna BEEBE. Registered for the Civil War in Richmond Co on July 1, 1863 at his age 33 as a married fisherman from Orient, but there is no record that he served.

Orient, L.I. Feb. 28 - The funeral services for Capt. Jeremiah H. Vail were held at his late residence here yesterday afternoon. The attendance was exceptionally large, many driving in to attend the funeral from nearby towns, including a large delegation of fishermen from East Marion, who had been closely associated in business with the deceased.

Captain Vail united with the Orient Methodist Church in 1842, and since then his Christian bearing had not varied a hair's breadth.

Capt. Vail leaves a family of eight grown children: Captain Louis Vale of the schooner Lavinia Campbell; George Vail of Philadelphia, Hollis, Elmer and Charles Vail; Mrs. Carrie Latham, Misses Rose and Jennie Vail of Orient. His father, Capt. Gilson Vail was a noted sea captain 25 years ago. The interment was in Orient Cemetery.
