John Lawrence Schnieders, 78, of Venice, Fla., passed away April 13, 2016, following an extended illness. John was born January 22, 1938, in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Loretta (Grothouse) and Lawrence Schnieders. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in Fort Wayne and attended DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago. John enlisted in the United States Navy, serving four years active duty and four years in the Reserves. During his service he witnessed a hydrogen bomb test in the South Pacific. He married Charlotte Laird Butterfield in Honolulu, Hawaii, on January 29, 1960. After his discharge from the Navy, he and Charlotte moved to Fort Wayne, where he worked for Bowmar Instrument Corp. and Racal-Milgo. While at Bowmar he helped develop the Bowmar Brain, the world’s first hand-held calculator with a digital display. John displayed an insatiable curiosity for the world around him, and his creative endeavors included electronics, musical instruments and jewelry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Mary, Noel, David, and Carolyn. Survivors include his spouse, Charlotte, and children Elizabeth (Donald) Johnson of Knightstown, Ind.; Kurt Schnieders of Carnegie, Pa.; Lawrence (Mary Ann) Schnieders of Eastlake, Ohio; John (Ann) Schnieders of Decatur, Ind.; and Barry Schnieders of Plymouth, Ind. Additional survivors include twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
