Laura Gibson Carr, 94, of Altavista died Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Rufus B. Carr who was killed on Omaha Beach on June,6 1944.

She was born September 16, 1921 in Seneca, a daughter of the late John Booker Gibson and Kate Frazier Gibson. She was a member of Central Baptist Church and a retired employee of The Lane Company. She was the youngest of eleven children. A child of the depression, she placed importance on basic needs and necessities while avoiding excesses. She was blessed by a long and healthy life, living independently and taking no prescription medications until the last two months of her life. She valued her religion, her family and her independence above all else.

She is survived by a son, Rufus B. Carr, Jr. and his wife Glenna of Altavista on whom she depended and gratefully appreciated; three granddaughters, Angela C. Myers, Lee-Anne F. Carr and Laura D. DuBase; two great grandchildren, Nickole Marie Crafton and Douglas Rosser Crafton, all of whom she loved and considered the essence of her family. She is also survived by Frances Harmon Savarese, a beloved sister and the last of her ten siblings.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Green Hill Cemetery, Altavista by the Rev. Nick Jones and Rev. David Bayse with interment to follow.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m., Sunday at Finch and Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at Rufus Carr's home, 107 Holly Hills Drive, Altavista. This obituary was obtained from the funeral home website.
