She was born about A.D. 800. Her first name--over time--becoming overshadowed, she is now called Rotrude, Hildegarde, or--at times--Mathilda. In any case, she is the grandchild of Charlemagne who wed Gerard, Count of Auvergne, and bore his children. (Gerard died 25 Jun, A.D. 841; during the battle of Fontenoy, near Auxerre, France; while serving in the army of Rotrude's half-brother, Charles II--"The Bald.") Rotrude died after 841. Source: F.L.
