According to her NC death certificate, Mary Ellender was the daughter of Moses (please see first NOTE below) and Rebecca Davenport Johnson. When she was enumerated during the 1900 Federal Census, she reported that she had married Ambrose Calvin Fox about 1868, and she had given birth to nine children with five still living.

He had died about 1836, as is indicated in the minutes of the Burke County, NC Court of Pleas and Quarters. She was born out of wedlock and was probably the illegitimate daughter of Rebecca Johnson and Wiley Gather."
