FREDERICK - Funeral for Carl "Tuffy" Edward Roberts, 90, of Frederick, will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2016, at First Baptist Church, Frederick, with the Rev. Eddie Whitworth, Living Water Ministries, officiating.
Carl passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016, in Frederick.
Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Cemetery under direction of Orr Gray Gish Funeral Home.
Carl "Tuffy" Edward Roberts was born Dec. 24, 1925, in Frederick, to Earl Almar and Lorene Grace (Boyd) Roberts Sr. He attended Henderson Consolidated No. 3, and graduated from Henderson High School in 1943. He attended Cameron State Agricultural College until he was drafted into the United States Army. After he was honorably discharged on Sept. 28, 1945, he returned home to Frederick, where he met the love of his life, Anna Lou McCollum on the basketball court at Davidson High School. They were united in marriage on Aug. 4, 1946, in First Baptist Church in Frederick. They moved to Lawton, where they were charter members of Trinity Baptist Church. He attended Cameron State Agricultural College before going to work at the Fort Sill Civil Service Department of Transportation, where he worked for 33 years until his retirement. He enjoyed traveling and served as tour director for many groups. He was very active in community, and he was instrumental in organizing a Booster Club at Cameron State Agricultural College to promote athletics. He loved traveling with the teams to all the games and had no trouble "as a fan" visiting with the referees on and off the court. Tuffy was inducted into the Cameron University Athletic Hall of Fame in February of 2011. He enjoyed playing golf and got a hole in one during his golfing years. After his retirement, they built their dream home outside of Cache, where he enjoyed having Terry Bell Horse Farm next door and enjoyed traveling to Ruidoso and Oklahoma City to cheer on their race horses. In 1998, they moved back home to Frederick, to be close to family and enjoy grandkids and old friends. He was a member of the Frederick Golf and Country Club and enjoyed playing with his sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, while reminding them often, "to keep your head down." For his 80th Birthday, he enjoyed a trip to Pebble Beach with his sons and grandson, but since there was not a birthday party, he organized his own party, an All-Day Birthday Celebration" with donuts and biscuits with his famous Blue Ribbon Plum Jelly and then for lunch served his famous homemade chili and hot dogs.
He never met a stranger and loved those hugs. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he originally met his Savior, married his wife, attended services and will have his last service before going home to join his Lord.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Treva Martin and Mary Pearl Smith; and three brothers: Earl Roberts Jr., Billy H. Roberts and David Alan Roberts.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Anna Lou Roberts, of the home; two sons: Eddie Mack Roberts and daughter-in-law Jean, and Doug Brent Roberts and wife Rita, of Frederick; two grandchildren: Amy Haynes and husband Todd, of Frederick; and Jeremy Roberts and wife Kelli, of Allen, Texas; four great-grandchildren: Courtney and Bryce Haynes and Gracie and Brooks Roberts; two sisters: Frances Ridings, of Frederick; and Carolyn Jean Laverty and husband Mike, of Depot Bay, Ore.; two sisters-in-law: Ruby Roberts and Vesta Roberts, and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Frederick Golf & Country Club, Drawer E, Frederick 73542; Cameron University, Athletic Department 2800 W. Gore Blvd, Lawton 73505; or First Baptist Church, 201 E. Grand, Frederick 73542.
