Mary Elizabeth Novak, 92, of Elderwood Nursing Facility in Waverly, N.Y., died April 13, following an extended illness.
She was born on June 17, 1923, the fifth child of Thomas and Marie Farrell.
Mary (Matriarch of the family) attended Epiphany School and graduated from Sayre High School in June 1941. During high school and a short time after graduation, she worked at Harrington Creamery in Sayre. In July 1941, she was hired at Ingersoll Rand in Athens.
In March 1945, Mary went to California on the train with her sister Theresa and baby niece Ann because Theresa's husband was getting leave from the Navy and Theresa could not travel alone. The train trip was six days and five nights. In Long Beach, California, Mary lived at the YMCA and worked for the Navy Department at Terminal Island Ship Yard from 1945 to April 1947. She danced to all the big bands, celebrated VJ day and attended her share of ship dances at the Hilton Hotel. She made many good friends and corresponded with some of them for many years. Oh what a time, oh what a story.
In 1947, Mary returned home to help with the family. In March 1948, her mother died and there were six children in school. Mary took over the running of the home. In December 1948, she went to work at Blue Swan Mills in Sayre and with her dad, she continued with the care and nurturing of the family. It was a busy time with graduations, weddings, First Communions, Confirmations, Showers, births and her own wedding and the year after year of homecoming visits, picnics, reunions as well as the trials and joys of a big family.
Mary left the Blue Swan and went to work at IBM in Owego, N.Y., in January 1958 and 25 years later, retired July 1, 1983.
In retirement, Mary was busy keeping her home in immaculate condition, taking care of her health with proper diet and fitness. She was an avid reader and did a daily crossword puzzle. She bowled for several years, was a member of the Moose Lodge. Mary was an active member of the Church of Epiphany where she maintained the Epiphany Cemetery Records for 20 years, an Altar and Rosary member, Perpetual Adoration (one hour every Friday praying for her family and friends).
Mary is predeceased by her husband John, her parents Thomas and Marie Farrell, her brothers Paul and wife Margaret Farrell, Jim and wife Frances Farrell, her sisters, Frances and husband Peter DeCarlo, Theresa and husband Larry Ware, Jean and husband Jim Donlin, brothers-in-laws Fred Horn and Dr. George Stohlman.
Mary is survived by her sisters, Genevieve and husband Dale Woith, Mesa, Ariz., Catherine Horn, Sayre, Pa., Sally Stohlman, Tampa, Fla., Rita and husband Len Nossal, Endwell, N.Y., many loving nieces and nephews especially Mary Fasset and Barb and Jerry Pritchard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of Epiphany in Sayre, Pa., on Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. Prior to Mass, the family will receive friends and family at 9 a.m. at the church.
Burial will be at Epiphany Cemetery, Sayre, Pa.
