From Sullivan Funeral Home Website:

James F. McDermott, age 80 of Hanson, passed away on November 6, 2015 in the comfort of his home with family by his side. He was the son of the late James F. and Muriel Lampe McDermott of Dorchester and Houghs Neck and the late Joseph and Elsie McDermott of Auburndale and Centerville, his aunt and uncle, who took Jim into their home after his mother died when he was age 11. After graduating high school, with the ultimate goal of a college education, he worked for a year at Raytheon in Waltham. While there he was mentored by an older co-worker who encouraged him to join the military for future education benefits. Jim joined the Army and spent three years in France and became fluent in French.

A CPA with a B.S. and an M.B.A from Northeastern University, Jim worked for a number of years in public accounting and private industry.

A chance opportunity to teach an accounting course led Jim to discover his true calling, teaching. He spent the rest of his career in education, serving on the faculty of Bentley, Northeastern, and retiring from Mount Ida College as Professor Emeritus. He was a dynamic teacher and his classes would fill quickly. He always made time for his students and mentored a number of them over the years.

A resident of Hanson for 46 years, he served as Chairman of the Finance Committee during the 1970’s and was Hanson’s Town Accountant in the early 1980’s. Jim was an Assistant Coach for the Whitman- Hanson B Mites Hockey Team and played hockey on an Old Timers Team at the Hobomock Rink in to 1970’s. He also served on the South Shore Voc. Tech. School Committee in the late 1980’s.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Elizabeth (Bette), a son James of N.Y. City, a daughter Kathleen Locke and her husband Jim of East Bridgewater. He was a loving Papa to his grandchildren Elisa McDermott of N.Y. and Kaylie, Evan and Lianna Gagnon of East Bridgewater. Papa always made time to explain anything or tell a story.

Also survived by brothers Thomas of Centerville, William and wife Diane of Framingham, and Richard and wife Margi of Berwick Maine. Cousins Atty. John McDermott of West Roxbury, Sally McDermott Nuckles of Austin TX and Helen McDermott and her partner Kathy Meisl of Waltham. Cousin of the late Atty. William McDermott of Dorchester. An uncle to several nieces and nephews.

Jim will also be missed by long time dear friends Jim and Margie Dewing, Jack and Anne Ricco, Bill and Tina Hurley, and S. Murry Simons a fellow professor.
