Herbert A. Cox, 95, of Kiowa, died Tuesday, April 12, 2016, at his home. Herbert was born July 14, 1920, in Denison, Texas, to Dennis Oliver and Mary Isbell Cox. Herbert was a graduate of Kiowa High School where he was involved in all athletic activities and was awarded the "Best All Around Athlete" in 1940. Upon graduating he was employed by the Katy Railroad for 15 years. He married Etta Louise Hayes on June 3, 1944, in Liberal, Kansas. He served 3-½ years in the United States Army Air Force during World War II. He later entered civil service at the U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot and retired after 28 years of employment. In World War II he saw service in the South Pacific and received the following awards and medals, G033 WD 45, Air Offensive Japan, China, East Indies, Western Pacific, Ryukyu and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the American Legion. He was also a member of Kiowa First Baptist Church being active in all activities of that church, serving as deacon and position of treasurer for 32 years. He was also an active choir member and was known throughout the community for his talents as a harmonica player and singer. He was also a talented writer and wrote many newspaper articles on traffic safety and other articles of special interest. He received the "Directors Award" from the director of Oklahoma Highway Safety, Joe McDonald, for exemplary service in the field of traffic safety and his contributions for saving lives on Oklahoma roads. He was a great supporter of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. He wrote a poem "Honor Your Highway Patrol" which was published and received statewide attention. He is survived by his sons, Robert Cox and Dennis Cox; one daughter, Mary June Cox; five grandsons; one granddaughter; seven great-grandsons; three great granddaughters, and one brother, Charley Cox. He was preceded in death by his wife, Etta Louise Cox; parents; brother, Leonard Cox; sisters, Maggie Nunnally, Alice Davison, Media Ann Ainsworth, and one daughter, Sharon Ludens. Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Brumley-Mills Funeral Home in McAlester. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016, at Kiowa First Baptist Church. Burial will be at Kiowa Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Brumley-Mills Funeral Home of McAlester.
