Lt. Col. John H. Schaub, Ret.
Mar. 8, 1938 - Apr. 12, 2016
Lt. Col. John H. Schaub, Ret., 78, of Mountain Home, Idaho died Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at home, of natural causes, surrounded by his family. He was born March 8, 1938 in St. Louis, Missouri to Harry and Evelyn Shenk Schaub. He grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, graduating from Oak Ridge High School in 1955. At the age of 17, he joined the Air Force working as a photographer. A few years later he was given the opportunity to pursue his dream of becoming a fighter pilot, entering Officer Candidate School and graduating at the top of his class. It was in Greenville, Mississippi that he met his true love Betty Ann Byers, whom he married shortly after. In 1967 they had their first child Sandra Lynn, followed by Scott Allen in 1970. As a military family they traveled from Kansas, Nevada, Alabama, Texas and Germany. One of his greatest accomplishments was surviving 100 missions over Vietnam. He retired in Mountain Home, Idaho spending most of his time raising a variety of farm animals, which we fondly referred to as a petting zoo. He also enjoyed time in his "retirement" working with his wife Betty at H&R Block and volunteering at the Mountain Home Visitor's Center. In the last years of his life he gained the greatest joy from talking to, and interacting with, his grandchildren.
John was a loving husband, caring dad and doting grandpa, known as Opa to his grandkids. He loved his family and always made sure they knew it. His family loved him dearly and he will be greatly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife Betty; daughter Sandra Lynn Gailey with son-in-law Eron and grandkids Austin and Justin; son Scott Allen Schaub with daughter-in-law Michelle and grandkids: Paige, Tanner and Cameron; sister Dorothy Olson with niece Kristi and nephews Bill and Glen; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Joe and Jan Byers with nephew Andy; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 21 at the Idaho State Veteran's Cemetery, 10100 Horseshoe Bend Road in Boise.
