While raising their daughters, Elena was became a member of American Association of University Women, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and participated in Baptist women all of her life. Eventually she became a full-time teacher with the district. She taught history, Spanish, and English as a second language over a ten year period at Freeport Intermediate, Clute Intermediate, Brazoswood High School, and the ninth grade center when it opened.
